Every legal matter is built from the same parts.

A house sale, a divorce, a will - each one comes down to who is involved, what it is about, the key dates and the money. The Matter Field Standard is the open, practice-management-neutral dictionary of those matter.* fields. We publish the master list once, so any practice management system fills in the same fields our matter plans and documents already expect - no bespoke mapping, no vendor lock-in.

One vocabulary, layered so it fits every matter: a universal base, then the area of law, then the jurisdiction, then the individual plan.

A practice management system never hard-codes a schema. It asks for the fields a given matter needs and receives one resolved list - each field stamped with the tier that declared it. Add a jurisdiction or a new plan and the list grows on its own.

How resolution works

A field set names its parent via extends. Resolution walks the chain root-first and merges by token - a child overrides its parent (definition, required flag, ordering), and every delivered field is stamped with definedIn provenance so a consumer always knows which tier declared it.

Consumers never hard-code leaf slugs: GET /api/v1/field-sets/resolve?practiceArea=conveyancing&jurisdiction=AU-QLD picks the deepest active set for the context, falling back state → country → geo-neutral area → base. Opening a “family law matter in Queensland” resolves base + family-law + family-law-au today, and picks up a QLD tier automatically the day one exists.

Requirements travel with the stream: required marks an individually mandatory field, and fields sharing a requirementGroup are jointly required - at least one must be filled (e.g. contract date or settlement date in the key_date group). A PMS maps these to its own blocking-field UI.

OMPN owns the vocabulary; the PMS owns the adapter

OMPN publishes canonical matter.* tokens - stamped with label, data type, options, party role, cardinality and requirements - and nothing specific to any single practice-management system. Each PMS maps tokens to its own internal storage in its own adapter, and any number of systems can integrate against the same vocabulary.

Only field definitions live here. Matter data - names, prices, tax file numbers - never crosses the network; the conformance endpoint verifies a PMS resolves the required tokens against a redacted matter without OMPN ever seeing client data.
