The Matter Field Standard.

Every legal matter is made of the same raw material - a client, a property, a settlement date, a court reference. The Matter Field Standard is the open, practice-management-neutral dictionary of those matter.* field tokens. It is versioned and hierarchical: a universal base set of fields every matter shares, extended by practice-area sets (conveyancing, family, litigation), extended again by plan-scoped sets that add the few tokens a specific workflow needs. Any PMS pre-fills against one resolved token list - no vendor lock-in, no bespoke mapping per plan.

“OMN owns the vocabulary; the PMS owns the adapter.”

- OMN Canonical Field Contract

We publish the canonical token list and keep it current; your practice management system decides how to map its own storage onto those tokens. One shared vocabulary, many adapters.

Individual matter plans add their own small set of tokens on top of a practice area. There are far too many to list - here is how they break down by practice area. Each resolves back through its parent to the base, so a PMS still sees one flat token list.

About the Field Standard

The Matter Field Standard is the data companion to our matter plans and document catalogue. A matter plan tells you how to run a matter; a document template produces its paperwork; the field standard is the shared vocabulary that binds both to your practice management system.

Sets are resolved root-first: a child set overrides its parent by token, and every field carries a definedIn provenance stamp naming the set that declared it. Slugs are immutable once published, so PMS clients can bind to them permanently. Integrate the vocabulary through the API.
